For the car this month, we head back in time, past most of the modern cars we have featured, all the way back to 1971 at Ferrari’s Maranello factory. Enzo Ferrari wanted something of a “lower” cost sports car to fit in the market segment below his masterful V12 GT cars. Enzo, however, didn’t want to cheapen his cars, or diminish the brand’s exclusivity, so he named this subgroup “Dino” cars after his son Alredo “Dino” Ferrari. They featured less powerful V6 engine cars, meant to bring the fight to Porsche’s 911 since the V12 cars were in a different class. Beautiful curves and a peppy transverse-mounted V6 rated at between 172-196HP depending on model specification. Fitted with a fully aluminum body for the early models, this was a true sporting car that offered great racing ability as well. Coming in, as planned, as a more affordable chassis, just over 3700 were delivered with a starting MSRP of $14,500. If you are one of the lucky few to have one, hold on to it because values are steadily climbing. Cars have been selling very strong in the high $300K range, with original chassis reaching into the $400-500K range.
