From Photographer Matt Wetzel…
Maybach isn’t a brand that is talked about much these days; try and think of the last time you actually saw one, it’s been awhile I would imagine. With all of the recent success with Rolls Royce, Bentley, and the other ultra luxury brands on the rise, Maybach knew that this was their chance to get back in the ring, and go for another round. As of late, the only current offering from the brand is a modified S Class sedan with a nicer interior, and bigger engine. To most, if you passed a black S Class sedan, you wouldn’t stop to inspect it to see what wheels were optioned, or if the side badges indicated it was a V8 or V12. So for consumers to spend $70,000 on top of the $100,000 S Class to have it receive the Maybach treatment, only to not have anyone notice may not be putting the spotlight on Maybach that they would like.
To respond to this, Mercedes-Maybach has partnered together again to produce a car that you cannot walk by with out noticing. This is a car that you cannot pass without giving it a thorough look over, taking a picture, and perhaps even staring in disbelief at the sheer proportions of it; This is a Maybach, the new 6 Concept.
While currently just a concept, Mercedes-Maybach assures us that this will move to production shortly, albeit most likely in a toned down form, we can only hope that the final product retains some of the outrageous but seductive lines showcased on this car. The 6 comes from the cars 6 meters of length, or 244 inches which for those measuring is over 2 feet longer than the S Class Coupe it has come from, and almost the same length as a Ford F350 Super Car with extended bed package. Complimenting the elongated hood and gullwing doors (Yes, it has gullwing doors) are the 24 inch wheels(!). This car is intended to be the ultimate, of ultimate luxurious cruisers. In terms of power, the car is fitted with 4 electric motors, one for each wheel combining for an output of 738 Horse Power. That should propel this behemoth to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in less than 4 seconds. Moving now to the inside, the cars seats wrap themselves up the door panel for seamless captivity and cushioning, and the car has a fully digital dashboard spanning the entire width of the car. Paired with autonomous driving capability, a road trip in this doesn’t sound too bad right about now.
Expect the final production version to break cover at either Geneva or New York in one – two years time. Pricing wasn’t mentioned, but based on the sedans starting price of $166,000 don’t expect this to be cheap. To put it on par with it’s competitors, prices from $300,000 and up would not be surprising. In contrast to our traditional “If you are reading this it is too late to order one” endings, this one hasn’t set a production limit just yet, so if you are in the market for an ultra luxury, technologically filled super coupe in the next 2-3 years, I would call your local Mercedes dealer promptly, and get your name on the list.
